Is Conservatism Dead?

It is looking like conserativism, at least the Republican variety of "conservatism" is on its death bed. Polls are showing a growing majority of the U.S. population identifies as Democrat now, a big change from a decade ago. Democratic presidential candidates have raised a lot more money than the Republicans. Bush and Cheney's poll numbers continue their nose dive. The Democratic congress is getting good poll numbers, and most people in polls expect a Democrat to win the 2008 presidential election. Of course, all of this could change, but it certainly is looking bad for the Republicans and conservatives. Oh yes, strong majorities of Americans oppose the Iraq occupation, think the corporate rich have too much political power, support government programs like Social Security and Medicare, and want universal health insurance, all "progressive" positions, to the left even of the Democratic leadership in Congress!

I would be careful in using the terms "republican" and "conservative" interchangably. I would consider myself a conservative, but in a much more pure sense. The current republican party stands for nothing and is irrelevant as far as I am concerned. So, a lot of us conservatives are kind of bailing out on the party.

It will definitely be an interesting election in 08. Interesting in the sense that I am curious as to who will emerge from the Republican side and how "conservative" they will be.

Democrats and Republicans are just bickering factions of the same ruling class of this country. There is no substantial difference.
The cold hard fact is that a mere 300,000 Americans control 50% of the entire income of the country, and that gap is getting bigger and bigger. The Democrats are impotent-- and complicit.
They do not even have the guts to cut off funding for Bush's Iraq disaster. Think of the good that could be done with those hundreds of billionas that are being thrown away in Iraq.
