Remember Stonewall: Gay Pride, Gay Power!

It is time for the "gay movement" to rediscover the radical roots of gay liberation. Gay Pride events have largely become commercialized parties. Its time to put "gay power" back in "gay pride"!

Socialism and Homosex

Doug Ireland has an excellent article in Gay City News on SOCIALISM AND HOMOSEX: An Ohio State Historian Rediscovers an Important Slice of Gay History, presenting some important recent historical research on how the Socialist Party began working to decriminalize homosexuality and support laws prohibiting discrimination against gays and lesbians in the 1950s, BEFORE former Communist Harry Hay's Mattachine Society. It's an interesting look into the radical roots of gay liberation in the United States.

The Socialist Party USA went on to become the first U.S. political party to nominate a gay candidate for President (David McReynolds) in 1980.

Bob Kohler, Gay Rights Pioneer, 1926-2007

Bob Kohler, Gay Rights Pioneer, 1926-2007

Bob Kohler, gay activist, former owner of The Loft on Christopher Street, Stonewall veteran, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Front, ACT UP member, and longtime fixture of Charles Street, died on Wednesday at the age of 81. The cause of death was cancer, according to friends. A Queens native who lost a kidney in World War II, Kohler was remembered as a tireless fighter for gay rights, transsexual rights, queer youth, and people with HIV/AIDS who never gave up the struggle even as he battled illness and advancing years.
