Marching on Memphis: National Conference for Media Reform

Memphis wil be in the national spotlight this week as the National Conference for Media Reform comes to Memphis this weekend (Jan. 12-14). The purpose of the conference is to save the U.S. media from conservative government and corporate control. For several decades, conservatives have taken control of most of the "mainstream media" (corporate controlled networks, media owenrship, etc.), and even expanded their own major media outlets (e.g. "Fox News"). The "mainstream media" has failed to do its job of critical oversight of the Bush administraton and the political system and participated in a stolen election (2000) and an illegal war based on lies and "misinformation" by our government. It is time to take OUR media back!

The speakers list at the conference is a who's who of U.S. progressive/liberal journalists, politicians and celebrities: Amy Goodman, Bill Moyers, Helen Thomas, Phil Donahue, Jane Fonda, Jesse Jackson, Sen. Bernie Sanders, etc... Its a great event for Memphis and the nation! If you can't attend, Free Press and Democracy Now! will be streaming some of the conference on the internet.

Here's a good article on the conference by Danny Schechter at meddiachannel.org, Marching on Memphis: The Media Movement

There are several other events being held in Memphis in conjunction with the conference:
The Mid South Peace & Justice Center will be having its 25th Anniversay Celebration on Thusday, Jan. 11, with special guest Amy Goodman from Democracy Now!

FAIR, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting will be having a 20th Anniversay Party on Friday, Jan. 12, 6:00 PM at T J Mulligans (362 N. Main).

Let's make Memphis the launching point of a major battle to take back our national media from right-wing conservatives and the corporate rich!
